a growing relationship

The first dental visit

The first dental visit is the foundation of a growing relationship between our dental office and your child.
Your child's first dental visit should be around his or her 1st birthday or when the first tooth comes in.

Your dentist will check to see if your child's teeth are emerging properly, look for any cavities, and assess for any flouride needs.

Before the first appointment

Before the first appointment, it may be helpful to take your child by the dental office - meeting the staff & familiarizing your child & yourself with the office routine may help your child's first check-up run smoothly.

We teach your child to be comfortable with dentistry by explaining the procedures and demonstrating the equipment in a fun and imaginative way. By teaching your child the importance of good oral health at a young age you're helping ensure a healthy smile for years to come.

A Smile 4U is designed just for children and provides an environment that is inviting and soothing. However, we understand that a child’s first dental visit can be a little unsettling. We will make every effort to ensure that you child’s appointment is an enjoyable experience. For your convenience, feel free to print and fill out the patient forms to expedite your sign in process.

When to Begin Brushing

Once your child's teeth begin showing, you can begin cleaning them by wiping them with a moist washcloth. As your child gets more teeth, you can begin to use a soft child's toothbrush.
You should use just a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste or a non-fluoride toothpaste until your child is able to spit it out. There are many child friendly flavored toothpastes that can make the experience easier.

For most toddlers, getting them to brush their teeth can be quite a challenge.
Some suggestions for making tooth brushing easier may include:

Letting your child pick out a toothbrush with their favorite
       characters
Try an inexpensive battery operated brush to add fun to the task.
Let them brush their own teeth first. You will likely have to assist
       in the process.
Read some children's books about tooth brushing together.
Have everyone brush their teeth at the same time.
Continue to encourage healthy habits even if your child is
resistant. The long-term results will be worth it!
